Transplanting Tomatoes Outdoors in May
May is prime time to move your hardy tomato seedlings outside. Follow these quick steps:
- Check nighttime temps - wait until lows stay above 10 °C (50 °F).
- Harden off - start with 2 h outdoors, adding 2 h each day over a week.
- Pick the perfect spot - full sun, well-drained soil, and some wind shelter.
- Plant deeply - bury stems up to the first true leaves to encourage extra roots.
- Mulch & water - apply organic mulch and water deeply at transplant.

I'm planting mine out this week into the greenhouse. With all the good weather we're getting, I think they will do ok. I usually wait until night temperatures are consistently above 10 degrees, but my plants have been desperate to be planted out for weeks.
