Spinach

Spinach is a fast leafy green prized for cool-season sowings, quick harvests and repeated leaf pickings. It is excellent for spring and autumn cropping, though it needs care in summer because heat and dry conditions push it rapidly into flower.

Care tips

Grow spinach in fertile moisture-retentive soil and do not allow it to dry out if you want large tender leaves. Pick outer leaves regularly, protect from leaf miner where that is a recurring issue, and avoid the hottest part of midsummer unless you have bolt-resistant varieties.

Common pests

Leaf miner, slugs, mildew, bolting.
