Astilbe

Astilbe is a hardy moisture-loving perennial grown for feathery flower plumes and finely cut foliage that bring texture to shaded borders. It is particularly useful where soil stays reliably damp and many sun-loving plants would struggle.

Care tips

Keep astilbe in fertile soil that does not dry out in summer, because drought quickly scorches foliage and shortens flowering. Mulch generously, water during dry spells, and divide clumps every few years if growth becomes congested or less floriferous.

Common pests

Vine weevil in pots, powdery mildew in dry shade, slugs.
